Great Entertainment At This Greatly Important Venue
When you step into the St. George Theatre, you step back in time. The 2,800 seat venue first opened its doors on December 4th, 1929 and was the crown jewel of New York-area theatres, even outshining the Capitol Theatre on Broadway.
Since then, St. George Theatre has had an exciting history. From 1938 to 1972, it operated as a movie theater. After 1972, it was converted into a night club, an antique showroom, and even a roller rink. Clearly, none of these ventures saw success. From the mid 1990s to 2004, the St. George’s only real claim to fame was being used to film the final scene in School of Rock.
Fortunately, in 2004 a non-profit was founded to save the theatre from demolition. After reopening in June of that year, the theatre again began welcoming some of the most talented performers of the modern era.
Upcoming events at this Staten Island venue include the Wagner College Theatre Spotlight which will celebrate the country’s #1 theatre program (call 442-2900 for tickets) on March 28th, The Wizard Of Oz on April 26th, and An Evening With Carol Barnett on May 9th. Do not miss your chance to be a part of these cultural events at this historic theatre. St. George Theatre is a shining gem of Staten Island, and enjoying one of these spectacular events at this local venue is sure to be an experience you will not soon forget.
